OsteoporosisOsteoporosis is a bone disorder that is characterized by by a loss of density in bone mass. It mainly occurs in older women and men, although it can be the result of other medical disorders in children. Osteoporosis makes bones weak and fragile, and it can lead to kyphosis (hunchback), loss of height, and bone fractures. Osteoporosis often goes undetected for years until a bone fracture takes place, but with proper diagnosis, this doesn’t have to happen. Osteoporosis, when it occurs as a primary condition (i.e. not due to other medical causes), is the result of your body breaking down old bone tissue faster than it can make new tissue. It's a major cause of hip and wrist fractures due to falling, especially in elderly patients. Vertebral fractures can lead to spinal cord compression that may require surgery to correct. Osteoporosis Diagnosis, Treatment, and RehabAt The Bonati institute, we offer a complete therapy service, from diagnosis and pain management to surgery and physical therapy. We can help you manage the osteoporosis, and if it's in an advanced stage, offer surgery if you're having pain or need vertebrae or discs repaired or removed. You might also require surgery to widen the spinal canal if fractures or other complications have caused nerve compression. Many of our patients require more than one procedure to fix their conditions. However, our surgeries are usually gentler than traditional open back surgery and require less recovery time. Our average patient needs two procedures. We do them in stages to reduce trauma and help you to return to your normal activities quicker.
