Orthopedic Surgeon

An orthopedic surgeon, or orthopedist, is a medical surgeon who specializes in musculoskeletal disorders. Orthopedic surgeons deal with conditions such as arthritis, bone fractures, osteoporosis and sports injuries. They treat patients with medicine as well as with surgery. Both orthopedic surgeons and neurological surgeons can focus on spinal surgery, although currently there is no designated official medical specialty called “spinal surgery.”

Orthopedic surgeons receive many years of training so that by the time they graduate, they are experienced surgeons. After four years of college and four years of medical school, they go through four or five years of specialized training. If they want to specialize even further, they can then do a post-graduate fellowship in spine surgery.

Research Your Options with an Orthopedic Surgeon

If you have a spinal condition and want to research your surgical options, The Bonati Institute has both orthopedic surgeons and neurological surgeons on our staff. We work together to treat our patients in the best way possible so you can find relief from your pain and other symptoms. Dr. Alfred Bonati pioneered the use of arthroscopic surgery with laser assistance on the spine and has been refining and perfecting his procedures over the past 25 years.

During your surgery at The Bonati Center, you will receive a local anesthetic and sedation, which eliminates the risks associated with general anesthesia and allows you to communicate directly with your orthopedic or neurosurgeon. This will give him or her immediate feedback about the surgery, and allow him or her to pinpoint the source of your pain.
