Methadone

Methadone is a synthetic opiate that is well known as a substitute drug used for addiction withdrawal. It’s also useful for chronic pain, and has a low risk of addiction in patients who use it for that purpose. It is a short-acting drug: in order to keep a steady dose in your body, you need to take it several times a day.

You have many choices when it comes to managing pain with medication, and methadone is just one example. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are often used first or for milder cases of pain. Certain antidepressants and anticonvulsants have been found to control pain in some patients. Muscle relaxants can also relieve pain and are often used along with specific pain relievers. If your pain is severe and lasts for three months or more, surgery might be an option to eliminate the source of pain.

How the Bonati Institute Uses Methadone

Here at The Bonati Institute, our Pain Management Center can prescribe methadone or another drug to help you feel comfortable immediately after surgery. We also offer epidural steroid injections (ESIs) to prevent further irritation to your nerve roots and help you move around easier. We encourage our surgery patients to begin walking immediately to retrain their spines to move correctly.

In our Physical Therapy Center, which is also on-site, our committed staff offers a full range of therapies for our surgery patients. They include biomechanics, deep massage and hydrotherapy, pool therapy, and physio-therapeutics with hot and cold packs. They are designed to give you the best care possible after surgery without the use of narcotics and drugs like methadone.
