Chronic Pain

Chronic back pain may prevent you from working or enjoying hobbies. It's a leading cause of people missing work and can even lead to depression. Chronic pain in the back can be caused by injuries or by degenerative conditions related to aging. Another cause is arthritis that weakens the vertebrae and discs, compressing the nerves in the spinal cord and causing pain.

Sometimes, the body tries to compensate for bulging discs or other causes of chronic back pain by growing bone spurs, called osteophytes. They narrow the spinal column and press on nerves or rupture the discs. You can feel chronic pain in other areas of the body if the nerve that services it is being compressed.

What Are Some Treatments for Chronic Pain?

Physical therapy and medication can often help you manage chronic back pain. At The Bonati Institute, we offer a surgical alternative that is much less traumatic than traditional open back surgery. It is done arthroscopically, which allows our surgeons to use very small incisions. Instead of cutting through muscle and creating scar tissue, we send our patients home the same day.

Physicians diagnose the causes of chronic back pain through the use of X-rays, MRIs, CT scans, and other diagnostic tools. Whatever is causing it, the pain can usually be treated or managed for relief of symptoms. If you would like to learn more about The Bonati Institute and whether our procedures are right for you, contact us by phone or through our online form.
