Bulging Disc In Spine

At The Bonati Institute, we see many patients with bulging discs in their backs. Discs are the soft, jelly-like cushions between the vertebrae in your spine. Bulging discs happen when the discs shift out of their normal positions gradually over time. They are usually diagnosed with MRIs or CT scans.

They may or may not be a serious problem, depending on their locations and whether they are pressing on nerves. There are several things you should know about bulging discs:

  • They can be caused by bone spurs
  • Collapsed space between the spinal vertebrae also causes them
  • They are not always painful
  • They can press against the nerves in your spine and cause pain and numbness
  • They can rupture, leading to more problems
  • Bulging discs and bone spur growth can narrow your spinal column, a process called stenosis

Help for Bulging Discs in Your Spine

At The Bonati Institute, we use a laser procedure called The Bonati Arthroscopic Laser Discectomy to correct stenosis and some disc problems. Through a small incision, we insert an endoscopic tube to guide us as we remove the part of the bulging disc that is pressing on your nerves. It is done under local anesthesia while you are awake, and you will be able to go home the same day.

If conservative treatments such as rest, exercise, and physical therapy have not helped you, you might need surgery. Many times, we can even correct failed back surgery. Please contact us today to learn more about The Bonati Institute and whether our surgery is right for you.
